Dr. Mercy Sepadi’s Journey: A Testament to Growth and Mentorship
In the heart of a global crisis, when the world was grappling with the uncertainty of a pandemic, I found a beacon of hope and transformation in the Pan African Women in Health (PAWH) program. Joining PAWH’s empowering community in 2020 marked the beginning of a pivotal chapter in my life.
The year 2020 was the time when I felt a sense of stagnation, that clouded my professional and financial aspirations. Furthermore, I wanted to embark on a PhD journey amidst the chaos of COVID-19 which I eventually registered in 2021. However, I had to rely on support from various people, which included a blend of informal and formal mentorships providing a scaffold for my ambitions. One of the people who assisted with my thoughts at this time was a mentor appointed by PAWH “Dr. Augusta Dorning”.
This program appointed a mentor whose wisdom and experience would become a cornerstone of my growth. Our mentorship, which began on Sunday, the 31 st of May 2020, was more than just an exchange of advice; it was a partnership that challenged me to introspect and evolve. After explaining to her my stagnation, Dr. Dorning’s words were “Everyone reaches the situation you currently find yourself in, and it is a time for exploring what can be a very exciting new Chapter!” resonated deeply with me. Her own narrative of career metamorphosis, spanning seven changes over 36 years, inspired me to embrace the possibilities that lay ahead.
With Dr. Dorning’s guidance, I delved into the heart of my profession, scrutinizing its weaknesses and strengths, and aligning them with my future goals. This introspection was not in vain. The once daunting professional risks transformed into stepping stones, leading me to a managerial role in government, and after a lecturer position, and ultimately, the proud achievement of a PhD in Public Health.
As I reflect on this journey, my heart swells with gratitude for the PAWH leadership, whose vision created a platform of unwavering support. To Dr. Dorning, my mentor and pillar of encouragement, I extend my deepest thanks. Your guidance was the catalyst for a chapter filled with growth, learning, and success.
This story is not just mine; it is a testament to the power of mentorship and the transformative impact of PAWH. To those who stand where I once did, feeling stagnant and fearful of the unknown, let my story be a reminder that with the right support and inner courage, a new and exciting chapter awaits.
Thank you, PAWH, for being the vessel of change. Thank you, Dr. Dorning, for lighting the path. As Women, Together, we rise.
